Gradebook and Groups

Fiddling around with the new gradebook and seperate groups functionality in Moodle 1.9. In Moodle 1.8 the seperate groups functionality was automtically ‘enforced’ on the gradebook. In 1.9 when viewing the participants list, only users from your group will show up but when viewing the gradebook, surprisingly, all users from all groups show.

To prevent that, you’ll have to configure the gradebook, which is now has it’s own entry in the admin block:

Grades-> Report Settings -> Grader Report  and set enable Show Groups

Then it will enable seperate groups also on the gradebook. A bit counterintuitive but it’s just changing your way of thinking about the gradebook: the gradebook is now centralised!.

Roles and Users

Tweaking the capabilities of Non-editing teachers a bit to unclutter the options for them. In this case, non-editing teachers are managers who are only interested in the progress of their staff (ie. students). So I override 2 capabilities:

  • unassign self; to prevent them from unenrolling themselves from the course
  • view reports; to remove the View Reports option from the admin menu

Fore students I disabled ‘view participants’, since in this case they are in many groups, I do not want them to see the participants from any high level group.
